Harlingen Medical Center Earns Path to Excellence Award for Commitment to Improving the Patient Experience

Harlingen – Healthcare is undergoing an evolution. It can be seen in hospitals across the country. And, right here at home, it's no different. The award-winning and nationally recognized Harlingen Medical Center continues to earn recognition for affording South Texas patients advanced clinical and surgical care, advanced medical devices, more comfortable and attractive physical spaces, and equally important, ensuring the best possible experience for its patients. The proof is in one of its most recent accolades, the 2015 Path to Excellence Award, presented by National Research Corporation (NRC).

2015 Path to excellence award winner

The National Research Corporation bestowed Harlingen Medical Center with this award based on its achievements within categories that patients have identified as being most important to the quality of their care. Two of these categories include: Rating of Hospital (overall experience) and Specialty of Hospital (i.e. emergency services, cardiovascular, orthopedic, general surgery).

"Creating an exceptional patient experience comes at the hands of many people working cohesively," said Brenda Ivory, President and Chief Executive Officer at Harlingen Medical Center. "The people that create this experience for our patients come from a wide range of disciplines and skill sets. It is an experience that is created over the length of the patients visit with us. It is our people listening to our patients and responding to their very specific needs."

Harlingen Medical Center was selected from an extensive database of National Research hospitals, from across the U.S., for its exemplary performance over the last four quarters.

"The Path to Excellence Award is an outstanding achievement for any hospital," said Helen Hardy, Senior Vice President of Client Services at National Research Corporation. "Implementing patient experience processes require an immense amount of time and resources. Earning this award demonstrates that Harlingen Medical Center understands what it truly means to define patient-centered care."

"We are consistently striving to improve quality and patient-centered care at Harlingen Medical Center," said Deborah Meeks, Chief Nursing Officer at Harlingen Medical Center. "We understand that firm commitment from us is essential to drive change and constant improvement. It is this drive, commitment, and attentive thinking that leads to creative, productive changes that improve what patients experience when they rely on us."

This is the __ consecutive year that Harlingen Medical Center has been awarded the Path to Excellence Award.

"I am very proud of the collaborative work that our physicians, our nurses, support staff and volunteers, have managed to accomplish helping our hospital earn this award, The Path to Excellence," said Ivory. "Our people are so dedicated to their work and our patients and it shows."

Harlingen Medical Center's commitment to the patient experience is the basis for its Patient Experience Department. Millie Villarreal, who heads the department, says they are here to ensure the patient, and their family, have their needs met.

"My department is dedicated to meeting and welcoming every patient that is admitted into the hospital while ensuring they have a successful and pleasant experience with us," said Villarreal. "If it means greeting a patient in the ER to address their needs, meeting the patient and their family in their private patient suite on one of the floors, or meeting a patient and a family member in our consultation room, our patient will receive the attention they need and their needs will be addressed. That's why we're here."

"As a 2015 award recipient, Harlingen Medical Center is among a select group of healthcare innovators leading the way on the path to patient-centered care," said Hardy.
